A man who cycled from Singapore to Johor thought it was going to be a “chill ride”, and it was anything but that.
According to his post on Instagram, Joel Liu In Jae experienced a punctured tyre when he reached Kota Tinggi on his bicycle. With the sun setting and no solution to his problem or a reservation for accomodations, Joel walked three kilometers to a nearby kampung.
There, he met a shop owner by the name of Faz. Luckily for Joel, Faz knew many of the kampung’s residents, and even managed to help the stranded cyclist find a campsite for him to spend the night.
Another man named Isa, who was passing, by learned of Joel’s situation and offered to help him fix his bicycle.
The man sat with Joel and tried all sorts of DIY solutions to help him fix the punctured tyre. The kind local even made multiple trips to his home just to get the right tools for the job.
After two hours of trying to fix the tyre, they were still unsuccessful. Joel then decided he would walk seven kilometers to the campsite he was going to spend the night in but Isa rode a motorcycle home and came back with a van to transport Joel and his bicycle to the campsite.
On the way, Isa asked Joel if he has eaten dinner, and then bought him a burger from a local stall.
“I’m a complete stranger who he’s probably never going to see again. But he did all this for me and left without a trace.
“You know, we often think of people living in developing areas as having less. But that day, I honestly felt like I was the one missing out on something,” Joel said in the video.
Many Malaysians left comments expressing their pride in the kampung people who helped Joel through his ordeal.
“Malaysian hospitality is the best!” one instagram user said.
“Why am I crying? So so wholesome and yes, I do think the ones we think have ‘less’ are really the ones with so much to give. So much to learn from as well. Perhaps we, the ones from the city, can learn a thing or two from them,” another user commented.
