Last Sunday (25 January), an elderly woman’s house in Kota Bahru, Kelantan, caught fire and burned down. The 89-year-old was caught in the flames and was burnt to death along with 70 of her pet cats and five stray dogs.
However, in a recent update it is understood that a few of the cats and dogs managed to survive the blaze. A post on Facebook by user Nor Izyan Syahida showed a picture of one of the cats — who has been aptly nicknamed “Api Bunga” (Fire Flower in English) — still alive and on the mend at a veterinary clinic.
Through the post, it is understood that Api Bunga is under the care of Vet O Vet Animal Medical Centre in Kota Bahru.
The veterinary clinic updated Nor Izyan on 27 January on the feline’s condition:
- Active, alert, and affectionate.
- Eating and drinking is okay.
- Only urinating.
- Sneezing and has a flu.
- On medication.
- On drip.
“Api Bunga, the name registered by the veterinary rescue team (in the chaos they have not confirmed the cat’s actual name by the owner), is one of the cats that was rescued from a house fire in Kota Bahru on 25 January 2026,” Nor Izyan said in her Facebook post.
“The burn injuries are not that severe, but there’s still trauma. Api Bunga had time to escape but there are burn marks on the feet and ears, and its whiskers are burnt off too,” she added.
According to her post, Nor Izyan said she will be adopting Api Bunga.
The woman who perished in the house fire was identified as Fatimah Mat Said, as reported by Sinar Harian.
Fatimah’s adopted daughter, Norhaeda Azahari said the cats were in cages when the fire broke out.
In a video shared on Threads, Norhaeda said she has left the surviving cats and dogs under the care of an individual named Lilly Gan.
“I’m not in a good state of mind right now. I’ve put the animals under the care of Lilly. When they’re all better, she will hand them over back to me,” she said.
