Political satirist and graphic artist Fahmi Reza has been arrested by police following a recent social media post he uploaded that was deemed as an “insult” to the Crown Prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
According to Free Malaysia Today, Lawyer Rajsurian Pillai said Fahmi was summoned to the Bukit Aman police headquarters today (19 December) to have his statement recorded for investigations under the Sedition Act and Communications and Multimedia Act.
Rajsurian mentioned that Fahmi’s phone has been seized, and he is trying to get the activist released on bail.
Earlier this week, more than 50 police reports were lodged against Fahmi for allegedly insulting Tunku Ismail through a post on social media. Fahmi also apparently received one death threat over the post.
The reports were filed by non-governmental organisations, youth associations, community leaders, individuals, and Johor executive council members Aznan Tamin and Khairin-Nisa Ismail.
Fahmi had previously been questioned by police over a separate incident involving a sticker depicting a mouse wearing a suit bearing the letters “PM”, which he displayed during a TikTok livestream of his Kelas Demokrasi titled “Boleh PMX Dipecat?”.
