The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has committed yet another foul and received a new penalty from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) after the world football governing body overturned the results of three international friendly matches previously involving the Harimau Malaya team.
These matches included Malaysia’s clash with Cape Verde at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, on 29 May, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The other two matches were Malaysia against Singapore at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on 4 September where Malaysia won 2-1, and Malaysia against Palestine at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Iskandar Puteri, Johor, on 8 September where Harimau Malaya secured a 1-0 victory.
What did FAM do wrong and what was the penalty?
According to a statement by FAM, the latest punishment was decided by FIFA’s disciplinary Committee which convened last Friday (12 December) in relation to a case involving the fielding of ineligible players.
The governing body explained that the meeting, chaired by FIFA Disciplinary Committee Deputy Chairman Jorge Palacio, found that FAM had violated Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (2025 Edition) by fielding ineligible players in the three matches.
“Accordingly, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided that Malaysia is declared to have lost all three matches by a scoreline of 3-0. In addition, FAM has also been fined CHF10,000 (RM51,414).
“FAM will submit a written request to obtain the grounds for the decision from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee before considering the next steps to be taken regarding this matter,” said FAM.
FAM was previously sanctioned by FIFA over alleged forgery of documents
Last September, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee imposed a 12-month suspension on seven naturalised Harimau Malaya players — Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal and Hector Hevel — over allegations of document falsification.
In addition to the suspension, the players were each fined CHF 2,000 (RM10,411), while FAM was fined CHF 350,000 (approximately RM1.8 million).
On 8 December, FAM Acting President Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi confirmed that the governing body had submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the punishment imposed by FIFA.
