AirAsia has updated its cabin crew uniform policy, giving female crew members the option to wear the hijab while on duty, a move that reflects the airline’s people-first approach and ongoing commitment to inclusivity.
According to a press statement by the airline, the decision was shaped by feedback from employees and the public, with AirAsia aiming to build a workplace where every Allstar (the name for AirAsia employees) feels confident, comfortable, and proud to represent the brand.
Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group, Bo Lingam, said the policy update marks another step in the airline’s evolution as a global carrier with a diverse workforce.
“Our uniforms have always highlighted professionalism, safety, and comfort,” he said.
This development strengthens those values by giving employees the option to represent AirAsia in a way that aligns with their beliefs.
Previously, hijabs were worn only on certain routes such as Jeddah, for example, where local regulations required it. With this update, all female crew members who choose to wear the hijab may now do so across the entire AirAsia network, without compromising the airline’s iconic identity.
Suhaila Hassan, Group Head of the Cabin Crew Department, said the update reflects the diversity of AirAsia’s Allstars, who come from various backgrounds but share the same dedication to delivering world-class service.
She added that the team will continue gathering feedback from crew members while working on the design and rollout. The goal is to implement the new policy by Ramadan 2026.
Capital A CEO Tony Fernandes echoed the sentiment, saying AirAsia’s strength lies in its diverse and outspoken workforce.
“When our cabin crew raised this with management, it was important for us to listen. Respecting different beliefs has always been part of our culture and is key to AirAsia’s success,” he said.
The airline confirmed that its signature red uniform will remain, now complemented by professionally designed hijab and trouser options similar to those used on Jeddah routes, ensuring comfort, safety, and a consistent brand identity across all flights.
