Mahavidya Dance Theatre (MDT) returns with The Saga of Taj Theatre, a multi-genre stage performance that combines Bharatanatyam, comedy theatre and film projection into a single compelling experience. The performance will be staged at Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) on 26 and 27 July 2025.
This original production follows the story of an old theatre on the brink of demolition – a symbolic setting where the past and future collide. As the story unfolds, the performance weaves in a vibrant dance drama dedicated to Lord Brahma, long associated with the idea of creation in Indian cultural tradition.
To enhance audience connection the dances are fully subtitled in English, and the use of multimedia projections offers an accessible and visually rich narrative.
More than 20 performers will take to the stage. The choreography and music, a collaboration between award-winning artists from Malaysia and India, draws from ancient South Indian classical traditions, with percussion arrangements by Maestro Kalaimamani S. Gopakumar and lyrics by bilingual writer and music critic Nirmala Raghavan. Dance research and choreography is by MDT founder Sheela Raghavan-Tan.
As with all MDT productions, The Saga of Taj Theatre is presented in support of the group’s ongoing efforts to offer classical arts education to underprivileged youth. MDT is a non-profit dance school that provides free training in the performing arts to children, regardless of background. Proceeds from this performance will go towards expanding these outreach efforts and creating more platforms for young performers.
Tickets to the show are by donation.
